Course Description: Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: In this course, Span 315 with Professor Oliva was interesting since we were learning the basics of translations in Spanish and English or English and Spanish so we can find the same meaning of translation for these two languages. In the whole semester we were just working on the forms of translation, we had different types of translations that we learned. I saw that translating was not that easy, it looks easy but to have an accurate translation a lot of study is needed. Since we needed to use different strategies to translate like descriptions. It also helped me improve my English skills, not just my Spanish but also my English. I believe this class has helped me through my time in CSUMB and also to my future goals I’ll try to achieve. In addition this class was so interesting since it has taught me strategies I will use to translate.
